Prepare for Success

Ideas are everywhere. Successful entrepreneurs know that not every idea is a good business opportunity. Before you bet the ranch on your idea, take the time to research who will buy your product or service and what competition you will face.

Research

While preparing your startup endeavor, be sure to research and understand the market that you will be entering. Several organizations in the Baltimore Resource Navigator offer assistance in this area (click on the links below).

Classes

Many support organizations have classes and workshops for all types of entrepreneurs.  Explore the Calendar of Events to find an event near you.

 Online Meeting (Live)
 Government Contracting, Selling to Government

Maryland PTAC is offering this special workshop in two parts.

The second part will provide the knowledge of how the government evaluates a fair and reasonable price in the absence of competition or if a cost-type contract is used. We will explore how costs are analyzed to establish a government negotiating position. This workshop will help to prepare you to deal better with the government during negotiations. We will also show you how the government computes a recommended fee or profit based on an assessment of the contractor risk.

Workshop Details:

Attendees will participate in a discussion on how to analyze the cost elements of a price using the following examples:

  1. Labor costs
  2. Material costs
  3. Other direct costs
  4. Overhead costs
  5. General and Administrative (G&A) costs
  6. Compute fee or profit

Workshop Instructor:

Mr. Gene Townsend will lead this workshop. Mr. Townsend has over 30 years in government contracting, cost and price analysis, Navy Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Townsend teaches cost and price analysis courses for several universities.
